Hrmm.. sorry, that's a bit like being offered cheese or egg as sandwich fillings for me!

2023-11-29 19:06:50 +0000 UTCI am a bit ambivalent about AI. Now I appreciate more just how tricky and time consuming it is to alter things I guess fan reworkings of favourite musicians are still a way off. But I cant help thinking it wont be too long before we hear "John Lennon" singing along with the Frogs Chorus and "Paul McCartney" harmonising on a newly discovered version of How Do You Sleep? Actually, now I say it both of those might be quite funny and not at worrying as the more sinister use of AI in the worlds of politics and advertising.

2023-11-29 14:08:53 +0000 UTCOK, so firstly... my take on a 90s Beatles album is almost completely different from What-If's. Don't want to say more, but trust me, especially if you like my other ones. Calico Skies seems to be winning, so you'll see later in December!! Secondly... how the AI thing works is this: first it requires someone to make an AI vocal profile for a specific Beatle (which means an AI algorithm has to process like 10 hours of that Beatle's isolated vocals!). Then it essentially creates a plugin for a multitrack recording program that will alter *your* voice into that specific Beatle's (look up a guy named There-I-Ruined-It, I think that really illustrates this the best). It's pretty neat, and when this tech first dropped, I did consider adding the individual Beatles' backing vocals to my 70s Beatles albums. BUT I sort of have a rule to not personally add instrumentation to any of this stuff, in trying to keep the source material "authentic", and I think I would be crossing a line that I can't come back from if I did do it. And that is what I'd have to do: re-sing all the parts myself (or one of my vocalist friends who would have to have a good ear for Beatles' vocal phrasing, which is the key, really), and that just seems like more work than is justified. So I don't currently have a plan to do any of the AI modeling, although it's not necessarily off the table. Thirdly... yeah, New York Morning is kinda corny, haha. I guess I only touched upon it lightly, but I always say New Morning as a very "New York" album, just as Nashville Skyline was meant to be a "Nashville" album (at least through Dylan's eyes). So it made sense to have the title reference that.

2023-11-29 14:05:53 +0000 UTCIs it wrong to ask (on this site specifically) where I may be able to find this "What If" site? Thanks (and please remove if it's against the rules).

2023-11-29 01:56:18 +0000 UTCI am a bigger fan of the Beatles than I am of Beach Boys, so my vote is biased in that sense. I agree that an AI assisted version of many Beatles solo song would be interesting, but not sure how that would work out, but then I am not that knowledgeable with the AI yet. I am curious though and I would love to see if any of the AI can be used for some mix projects of my own.

2023-11-29 01:38:56 +0000 UTCNaw, just SMilE itself. It's almost like too much of a good thing--I have it on regular rotation (including Brian Wilson's own version plus the 5-disc box set). Every iteration you have made has its merits, and I'm not complaining, but I'd personally prefer something different. That said, your site, your decision--if this is the one, I'll be listening to it!

2023-11-29 01:01:45 +0000 UTCOn the other hand I doubt a "new" Beatles album released now would be very inspiring even if they were still together? The What If site has already had a crack following Now And Then and I found it a bit underwhelming mainly because the material was not very good. What might be interesting - or appalling - is if someone starts using AI to produce "Beatle" versions of songs from solo albums as though the four members were playing and singing on them? And while there are a lot of SMILE imaginings around I would be interested to hear what ATNW can add so that gets my vote. Loved the Dylan recreation by the way but would not New York Morning have been a better name - or is that too corny?

2023-11-28 23:35:59 +0000 UTCLike, tired of The Beach Boys or tired of the idea of updates/upgrades altogether?
Jesse Miller
2023-11-28 23:15:19 +0000 UTCAs much as I love the Beach Boys, SMiLE, and the various re-imaginings/updates, I'm a little tired of it.

2023-11-28 21:43:54 +0000 UTCIt's almost kinda cruel, ain't it?

2023-11-28 21:15:40 +0000 UTCWhat I assume is a late 90s Beatles reimagining versus upgrades to already stellar mixes of the greatest lost album of all time. You don't make this easy...
