Love and Respect for July 19th Podcast
Added 2024-07-15 21:35:53 +0000 UTCIt's time to get your questions in for this week's podcast. This week I'll be back, but Isla will be out. I don't have a full list of everything we'll be discussing yet, but it's a stacked week for releases. So I'm thinking we'll have a lot of games to chat about, including Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus and some other stuff I played while I was out of town.
Please submit your entries by Wednesday at 5:00 PM. And be sure to include your preferred name if it's different from what's listed on your Patreon profile.
Type your question, topic, or game in the comments below. If your entry is not selected, feel free to submit it again the following week. We appreciate your support and are grateful for each and every submission, if we're able to include them in the podcast or not.

This week, I’ve sunk a great many hours into an RPG where you navigate the complicated threads of life in a large school. With great aspirations, you must manage your time between studies, social time with friends, building your public image, improving your strength, achieving perks for mental and physical attributes, going through trials to improve your skills, leveling up, and gaining the approval of those around you. This is all in service of bolstering your performance in skirmishes that occur at regular cadence, where you can’t just focus on the present moment, but must also consider how these battles impact wear and tear on your body for future fights. All this combines in the ultimate endgame: winning the acclaim of your party, your mentor, and society at large. This game is, obviously, EA College Football 2025 and their Road to Glory mode. My quarterback, Pythagoras Toyota, did not play a single snap his freshman year, and was discovered to have created a burner Twitter account to artificially boost his own fragile sense of self-worth. An injury next year, though, was the canon event he needed to prevail. It’s often in places we rarely tread where we unearth wondrous things. What’s the last game you played entirely out of your typical paradigm that you fell in love with? Adoration and admiration.

2024-07-17 17:26:41 +0000 UTCHi Allies! During vacation we started building a new kitchen in our cabin. While doing so I assembled the kitchen sink water supply, heater and drain myself and to my surprise it actually went well! Since I assume I owe this successful plumbing to all the Super Mario games I played through out the years I decided to celebrate by hooking up the NES mini and play some original SMB. To my great dismay my skill at this game had diminished greatly! After growing frustrated I decided to switch to Mega Man 2, a game I finished countless times in my youth. I'm turning 42 so I do realize that might as well be a hundred years ago but surely I would still breeze through the levels and easily kick some robot master bottoms!? No I did not! The despair of total muscle memory failure nearly threw me into a fit! After trying some Shadow Warrior as well I just muttered and went back to assembling furniture. Question: Have you ever gone back to old games you perceived yourself to have mastered only to realize you have lost your skill? Love and respect! /Andreas Risberg

2024-07-17 14:22:55 +0000 UTCHey Allies, I want to ask you about close calls, or getting out by the skin of your teeth in gaming. As a personal anecdote: my younger brother got his friend Ethan to play through MGS1 for the first time. I watched Ethan beat Liquid in the fist fight on top Rex with 0.5 seconds left. L&R gimme your close calls

2024-07-17 08:05:52 +0000 UTCI wanted to ask the panel a simple question: what videogame powerup sprites instill the most dopamine when you see them? I'm not really talking about what powerup or upgrade itself gets you the most excited, but something about the visual itself that awakens something deep in your brain. Personally, I grew up with the NES and Super Nintendo, so there's a lot of powerup sprites that make me feel nostalgic, but for whatever reason, the ones that are the most cemented in my mind are the weapon powerups from Contra on the NES. We didn't even have that game, but I remember watching our babysitter play it and just getting such a rush of excitement when I'd see that icon pop out and sit on the screen before he'd pick it up. I think a close second would be seeing a new beam weapon in the arms of a Chozo statue in Super Metroid, so maybe there's something to seeing a powerup sprite with a small letter indicating what kind of weapon it is. What about you? Thanks for listening and taking my question. Love&Respect, Joe

2024-07-17 00:45:08 +0000 UTCAllies. This week I decided to take Huber up on one of his recommendations. Is it FIST I hear you ask? Onimusha? Darkest dungeon?! No, almonds. And I am here to report to all viewers and listeners that almonds SUCK. THEY ARE DRY AND STALE AND GET STUCK IN YOUR TEETH. So, my question is what is your go-to snack? Preferably healthy but unhealthy will suffice. Mine used to be sour skittles but since turning into my thirties, they make me feel so bad. Thanks!

2024-07-16 19:28:48 +0000 UTCDear Allies, I’ve officially given up on trying to force myself to enjoy Japanese storytelling in games. From final fantasy 7 remake to yakuza, Nier Automata and even persona 5. I can see the appeal. I can see the potential. But I simply can’t look past the constant grunts, cringe-worthy dialogue, random thumbs up, women who behave like little girls and being handheld through the entire story through constant and excessive exposition. The storytelling is so different to what I enjoy it makes me wonder if the average Japanese gamer has the same feelings when it comes to storytelling outside of Japanese media. Do you have any insights on how much is lost to gamers when a game tries to cross cultural boundaries? Do you experience anything like this yourself? Love & Respect.

2024-07-16 15:03:19 +0000 UTCHello Allies, Can you think of a time when you really had to fight for something at work despite an editor or a higher up insisting on a certain change. I was recently writing an article about STALKER and would write "Chornobyl" but the editor kept on changing it to Chernobyl, even though both the sequel and the re-releases changed the spelling officially to Chornobyl. After a back and forth they relented and let me keep the spelling, my argument being that during this time it's borderline offensive to use the old spelling and that even the developers have changed the title.

2024-07-16 14:39:00 +0000 UTCHello Allies, How many games do you purchase for yourself VS getting 'the codes'? I know it's something of a running joke for you all to pester Bloodworth for 'the codes' to an interesting new title, but at the same time you do seem to get early/exclusive access to a lot of stuff, with seemingly every Sony first party game having 'review access provided by PlayStation®'. When you DO indeed play a game via 'the codes', do you spare a thought to the retail price in your impressions/reviews? You talk about so many different kinds of games on the podcast, it can be tough at times while listening to remember whether you're trying a game on your own initiative or because you got 'the codes' for it from the publisher. Apologies if this is information you can't legally divulge. L&R, Phil.

2024-07-16 08:36:15 +0000 UTCHello Allies, Have there been any new soundtracks that have caught your attentions lately? Games, movies, shows, etc. Even older soundtracks that you might have only recently stumbled across. I'm looking to add a few more tracks to my playlists. Thanks in advance, L&R.

2024-07-15 22:34:29 +0000 UTCHello allies, I'm hoping you got a chance to check out some of the Unfiction projects I suggested last time. I’m happy to hear Isla wanted to look more into them, and I think Huber would like them since he loves horror, which those specifically were. This time, still in the Unfiction genre, I wanted to see if you guys have played any Unfiction games without realizing it, supposedly canceled or recalled games from early generations, games that make you question “did this game actually exist all those years ago?” Catastrophe Crow, Shipwrecked 64, Basilisk 2000, Valle Verde and Petscop just to name a few. These are actual games you can play right now that play off that they did exist in the past. My question is this, have any of the panelist played any of these games or games in this style, and if so, what are some of your favorites. Love and respect
