Love and Respect for Sep 13th Podcast

It's time to get your questions in for this week's podcast. It looks like that PS5 Pro announcement is actually happening, so I imagine we'll have a lot to say about whatever Sony's "technical presentation" looks like. As for games, we've got a number of small but good ones in the pipe, including Yars Rising, I Am Your Beast, and the Castlevania DS collection.

Type your question, topic, or game in the comments below. If your entry is not selected, feel free to submit it again the following week. We appreciate your support and are grateful for each and every submission, if we're able to include them in the podcast or not.

Please submit your entries by Wednesday at 5:00 PM. Be sure to include your preferred name if it's different from what's listed on your Patreon profile.

Late entry, but it did come to mind just now: With how brief the ps5pro video was, do you think that an original cut that used heavy examples from Concord exists somewhere on the cutting room floor? What upcoming playstation 5 titles do you think would benefit from an enhanced framerate over what we think the ps5 would provide? Do we want on console multiplayer games like Marathon to have a 60fps pro mode and a 30fps regular mode?

Hi, Allies! In discussions you often talk about the low completion rate of games. I agree, there are many games in my backlog which I really should return to and see them through. However, I also find the opposite to be true. I sometimes see games to completion, or even 100% a game, despite me not having a good time with it. The game feels like a chore to play, and when I finally the see credits roll, I just feel relived its finished so I can move on with my life. Do you have any such experiences? For me, Jet Force Gemini, Ecco the Dolphin and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) come to mind. Games that I should have put down far before I ever saw credits roll. Love and Respect, Jon

I recently got a Steam Deck, which is my first foray into PC gaming since the Windows XP days. I'm loving it so far: it solves all the things that have kept me out of PC gaming in the past: good drivers, controller support, clear info about how/whether it will work on my device, not dealing with Windows, reliable sleep/wake, etc. With all that noise out of the way, I've been really enjoying having access to such a huge variety of games from different sources and eras. Very quickly, though, my mind turned to how great it would be to be able to play all these games on my TV, at a decent fidelity, with all the modern conveniences of the Deck. So my question is, what do you think the future of PC gaming in the living room looks like? Do you ever see Valve giving Steam Machines another try, taking into account everything they've learned from the Deck? Alternatively, as Microsoft starts behaving less like a traditional console manufacturer, might the future of Xbox be less like a traditional console and more like a streamlined PC environment? Cheers!

Hey Allies- I've written before about how I can't really tell the difference between 60 fps and 30 fps. So with that, the PS5 Pro doesn't seem terribly appealing to me. The big graphical improvement that I want is an elimination of clipping. I'm sure it's tough to do, what with all the customization options out there, but what I really want is to see Aloy's hair land realistically on her armor. That's the next gen graphical upgrade that I'm looking for. Any chance we get this with the PS6? Or is this more of a developer thing vs. hardware issue? Love and Respect, Eric

Hey Allies, I find it almost unbearable to follow social media whenever a game company shows off something new or a new game/project is revealed. The sheer amount of negativity and misinformation is at an absurd level now. After the Pro showcase no one was talking about the actual console everyone was just talking about the price. Don’t get me wrong, I find it totally fair to discuss the price of a new hardware but it should be balanced and it must consider the facts. But unfortunately the number of YouTubers and games media outlets that just jumped the gun is unbelievable. There was no real discussion about inflation, about the higher cost of tech hardware in general, about the fact that the Pro comes with twice as much storage etc. these are all factors to consider when discussing the price. Yes, the price may be too much for a lot of people but I don’t really think it’s because of a greedy company that wants to rip their core audience. Another aspect of this whole discussion that really bothers me is a feeling of pure hypocrisy because the same people lighting their torches and having their pitchforks raised are the same ones that tell you whenever they can what a great device the Steam Deck OLED is, a digital only handheld device that cost up 649$. Why is it ok to praise one expensive high-end gaming hardware but complain about another? I’m disappointed that all we seem to care about are the negative things nowadays, where is the love for gaming, the excitement, the passion? L&R Daniel

Hi guys, No surprise you’ll be inundated with discussion points about PS5 Pro this week. In the hope I’m not repeating what’s already been said; The last Sony console I bought was a full price PS4 Pro for £349. Eight years later, a new PS5 Pro is now £699. That’s exactly double the cost for the same product idea, release date to release date. PS5 Pro does seem like a very niche product at this price point, and upgrades are seemingly becoming less and less worth it. But I wanted to try and understand why this might be the case before having a completely negative view. Here are a few questions or thoughts which you might be able to advise on better than my own research: * Along with any inflation since the PS4 Pro and any material shortage (if that’s still a thing), could it be that the level of tech required to make enough of a difference to be considered an upgrade, is just this expensive now? * Is the PS5 Pro’s use of AI upscaling the best way Sony could attempt to monitor its success; with a view to improve it as a key aspect of the PS6? * Or otherwise, do you think this is actually just bad judgement or plain greed in an odd attempt to continue sales? And lastly - Good God!! Does a stand really cause them that much trouble!!??? Thanks as always guys! Love & respect David Moss

Dear Allies,

I’ve officially given up on trying to force myself to enjoy Japanese storytelling in games. From final fantasy 7 remake to Yakuza, Nier Automata and even Persona 5. I can see the appeal. I can see the potential. But I simply can’t look past the constant grunts, cringe-worthy dialogue, random thumbs up, women who behave like little girls and being handheld through the entire story through constant and excessive exposition. The storytelling is so different to what I enjoy it makes me wonder if the average Japanese gamer has the same feelings when it comes to storytelling outside of Japanese media. Do you have any insights on how much is lost to gamers when a game tries to cross cultural boundaries? Do you experience anything like this yourself? Love & Respect.

Hello allies, Music is a very important part of any game, but what happens when they collaberate with musicians in our world? Bands that exist in honor of their favorite games and pay homage to there favorite series. The Protomen, with Act 1 and Act 2: the Father of Death, inspired by Megaman, Ice Nine Kills, with Welcome to Horrorwood 1 and 2, inspired by old school horror movies like Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street, or Dragonforce with Warp Speed Warriors, which has a Legend of Zelda song called “Power of the Trifoce.” I love collaberations like these, and was wondering what some of your favorite music collaberations for video games are? L&R Hello Allies. As the PS5 pro is clearly an expensive piece of hardware, do you think Nintendo's next console, the PS6 and whatever Xbox will next offer will keep raising this price ceiling? - Will Ashley

Hey Allies, I’ve been wondering—are the conversations we have in the gaming community, like the importance of review scores or the buzz around new consoles, things that the general public even cares about? Do you think we sometimes overestimate how much non-gamers are engaged with these topics? How much does the average non-gamer care about these discussions? L&R Steven “MXAGhost” Oz
