I remember in the 90s how a lot of tie-in games for movies and shows would often steal entire game designs and slap a facade on top of them before calling it a day. One that stuck out to me was Animorphs for the gameboy; it was a near 1:1 of pokemon in 2000, using characters’ collection of animals they could turn into as a standin for their pokemon lineup. I believe you could gain new transformations thru random encounters like in pokemon I thought this implication of Pokémon’s design was really cleaver, but also wondered how the hell they didn’t get sued into oblivion for it
