The Silent Hill 2 Remake is Shockingly Great

Hi Isla. You’ve asked how Silent Hill 2 Remake lands for those who’re brand new. My knowledge of the series was limited to “it’s a phycological horror with pyramid head”, and here’s what I think after finishing the Remake. Firstly, the game is mostly fun. I didn’t like the prison and the next section, which is also in complete darkness, because you are walking by the map there, which gets old pretty quickly. The rest, however, had good pacing, fun puzzles and good exploration. The combat wasn’t challenging, which is what I like for this type of game (played on normal, thoroughly explored and was never low on resources). From narrative perspective, I was intrigued, but I have to say that a lot of things went over my head, which I attribute to not knowing the first game (protagonists jumps into bottomless pits without hesitation – guess this was set up in Silent Hill 1, and so on). I don’t think the game does a good enough job with onboarding new players. I’ve read all the documents I could find, but I don’t really understand who the characters are and what motivates them. When near the end the protagonist said something like “I understand it now”, I wanted to reply “well, I don’t”. Overall, I'm not regretting buying it and finishing Silent Hill 2, but I don’t see anything exceptional here. But of course, it’s normal for art to have a different effect on different people, and I’m happy for those who were moved by this game.
