Love and Respect for Oct 11th Podcast

It's time to get your questions in for this week's podcast. This week is our Fall Game Preview (admittedly a bit late) where we go over all the games coming out before the end of the year. We'll also be sharing impressions of Metaphor ReFantazio and Phoenix Springs, and probably the big Halo news as well.

Type your question, topic, or game in the comments below. If your entry is not selected, feel free to submit it again the following week. We appreciate your support and are grateful for each and every submission, if we're able to include them in the podcast or not.

Please submit your entries by Wednesday at 5:00 PM. Be sure to include your preferred name if it's different from what's listed on your Patreon profile.

G’day Allies I recently picked up a copy of Dark Souls 3 on a steam sale and while I will definitely stick with it and can see the beauty… my initial impression is somewhat underwhelming. At first glance it looks flat, feels stiff and is more punishing than I would like. It seems a lot like Elden Ring, just not quite as good. I must confess that I have no nostalgia for Dark Souls as Elden Ring was my first FromSoftware game and after spending around 250 hours in the lands between and 100 hours in Shadow of the Erd Tree I can say with hand on heart that ER is without doubt one the best games I’ve ever played. I’ve also recently made my way through the entirety of Sekiro, demon of hatred and all, and found my experience with that game utterly thrilling. It makes me think that maybe DS3 is just a little too old for me to experience and enjoy in 2024. Recently after hearing about the upcomming re-master of Horizon Zero Dawn I thought to myself, “it’s way too soon for a re-release of a game that isn’t that old… what’s the point?!”. However, this week I’m hearing a number of people online saying that their experience with the Silent Hill 2 re-make is also underwhelming, citing the fact the the gameplay feels old and outdated. This is making me rethink my initial thoughts of the Horizon re-master… is it harder for re-makes and re-masters of older games to ‘hit hard’ in 2024 when most of their appeal lies in nostalgia? Is this why we are seeing games like Last of Us 1 and Horizon Zero Dawn re-released so soon, because they are more approachable for current players due to their recency? When thinking of trying to sell a re-make did Konami look at Metal Gear Solid 1 and think “hmmm this gameplay wouldn’t be fun in 2024… let’s do MGS3 instead.” Apologies for the long question. I hope you are all well. Thank you so much for the content. Much love and respect from Australia. Slimbone x

[repeat from last week with some slight edits] Do you think collectors items based on anniversaries have less value in the long run? While the PS5 Pro 30th Anniversary bundle is expensive, part of me could have justified spending the extra money with the assumption that I'll be able to resell it someday. However, I bought the 25th Super Mario Brothers Anniversary DSiXL when it came out with the same mindset, and I just checked on eBay and it's not selling for very much, even though DS hardware and software is in demand. These premium collectors items may be unique and pleasant looking, but I feel like associated them with an anniversary that will be dated oddly reduces their timelessness. Do you believe the upcoming hardware that looks like the original Playstation hardware would actually be better if they completely ignored the 30th anniversary, or do you like its association with a big milestone? Hello Allies !!! No question just hoping you all are good and wanted to know what spooky games will be streamed by you guys this month?

Happy spooky season Allies! Since it's October, I wanted to ask about any real life horror experiences you have had in your many years of gaming! For example, I remember playing Twisted Metal on PS3 and was trying to beat the final boss on the hardest difficulty in order to unlock a secret character. I eventually succeeded but during the cutscene that plays when you beat him my system shut down and I discovered that the system overheated and I got a yellow light of death, indicating my system power supply had overheated and died. So to my horror, I was worried that I had lost years worth of save data on my console, would not be able to retrieve the game disc from the disc drive, and whether or not the game saved my progress from that difficult fight. Luckily I was able to bring my system back to life by stripping it down to the motherboard, reapply thermal paste to the GPU and used a heat gun on the motherboard, which allowed me to turn my system on, get my game disc back, back up my save data, and yes, the game had saved my progress on the boss fight! After that ordeal I quickly replaced my system so that would never happen again. So any frightful stories like that the panel has gone through before?

I think we can all agree that representation in video games is important. I'm always happy to expand my headspace in hopes of gaining insight as to the experiences of others. That said, I was wondering why we don't see more characters in games that are in recovery (or struggling with an addiction). I know there is an aspect of anonymity involved in many recovery programs, but I just can't help but feel that it's an under-represented experience given how common an issue it seems to be in so many of our lives. Any examples of games and or characters you can think of that might fit with these themes? Thx and L&R to you cuties! -PanaMuse

Hey Allies, I'm here with a gaming confession, back during my PS1 days, I had a copy of Parasite Eve that was effectively broken, the game wouldn't load past a pivotal point on the first disc. For years, yes years, I couldn't beat the game, until one day while traveling out of state with my family, I found a copy of PE to rent at Blockbuster. I convinced my parents to rent me the game and as soon as we got back to where we were staying, I popped in the first disc and finally played past the damaged portion of my game. When it came to return the game, the devil on my shoulder took over, and I replaced Blockbuster's first disc of the game with my first disc, which I still own to this day. I would go on to beat PE, it becoming one of my favorite games of all time. I still feel a bit guilty about what I did, just thinking of the poor kid who rented it after me, thus my confession. Now it's your turn allies, confession time, what are some of the lengths you've gone to play, beat or acquire a game? L&R L. E. L. (You pronounce my name by saying each letter individually.) P.S. Sorry for the lengthy post.

Allies!! I am happy to hear that we will be getting Lunar Remastered Collection. Lunar SSS is one of my favorite games of all time. I recently heard that the PS1 game had different story elements from the Sega CD game. Making me want to go back and play the original. My question to the Allies, besides the SNES and Genesis differences in certain games, what other games are you aware of that have major changes after being rereleased (excluding graphical and QOL updates)? Thanks. L&R

Hi Allies, I think many of us believed that Silent Hill 2 would be a shoddy and unnecessary remake, but when the critic reviews and scores came out, many of us became excited and have since purchased it. What games do you recall were bludgeoned by naysayers before they were released, but when the positive reviews came in everybody was excited about them all of a sudden?

Hello Allies: the Biggest Gaming Event of the Year is still to come - The Game Awards! What are the odds and thoughts of the Allies about Keighley having the Exclusive Switch 2 Reveal? It’s prime time and would be perfect given the worldwide audience letting people know it’s releasing before April 2025. It would create an extra level of buzz and help the Industry as a whole [now that AAA gaming development time and budgets are broken] L&R Michael.

Hey Allies, Until Dawn's Remake by Ballistic Moons launched over the weekend to poor reviews and seemingly poor sales based on estimates. While the remake was among those games to garner the question "Why are you remaking this?", this new release seems to actually be a worse way to play the game than the original, due to remake attempts resulting in an experience that lacks all the careful lighting, cinematography, and most importantly, vibes, of the original release. This is in stark contrast to this weeks other Horror Remake, Silent Hill 2, which appears to have arrived with vibes very much intact. I know we're used to games "Not needing a remake" by now, and getting them anyway. But are there videogames that should never be remade? Regardless of how old they become? Love and Respect, Harrison
