Update on Omegle automation

Hey everyone, sorry for the long silence.

Just wanted to let you know that after three months of frustrating development, OmegleLike Skipper has finally been released. You can try it right now by installing it from this link.

Videochat Extension also just received a huge update—comparable in size to the entire codebase of the original Videochat Extension. Both the location filter and blacklist are back, along with countless minor improvements and fixes. Will post the full changelogs later.

We have no intention of letting VEXT stagnate much longer. With the user base rotation nearly complete and most of the brain-melting tasks behind, you can expect more frequent updates over the next few months. We could have the final product ready by the end of summer. Our numbers don't look good, and a lot of work needs to be done to improve them in the long run.

The gender filter hasn't been released yet, but all the building blocks are there, and we expect to publish it as soon as possible. Maybe in a few weeks, most likely a bit sooner. It was simply too much to include in one release.

After finally getting to test my own creation on actual Omegle clones—moving out of that safe synthetic dev environment—I managed to find a bunch of issues that never even crossed my radar. It was a bit of a cold shower, to be honest. I really wish more people would care enough to report issues! Big shoutout to the person who caught that “cellural” typo—much appreciated.

What is OmegleLike Skipper?

OmegleLike Skipper is an AutoHotkey-based program that brings the automation capabilities of the original extension to your Windows machine. Whether you prefer hitting the left arrow key to skip or letting the Videochat Extension handle the skip decision for you, it’s got you covered.

Right now, it can auto-skip users based on their location or via the blacklist filtering. Ran some internal tests, and trust me—the difference is huge. It seriously improves the user experience across all Omegle-like sites, especially the smaller ones. I almost remembered why I wrote all those features 4 years ago.

Privacy and security thoughts

The situation with random Ome.tv attacks still has not received a proper resolution, and we don't have much reliable information to act upon. We continue to monitor everything we can, but our current strategy is to assume that every single entity we rely on may turn hostile and attack our project/users at any given point in time. There are still only a few hundreds people using Videochat Extension on ome.tv-like websites, but since Skipper is freeware, we had to ensure that a lot of people could use it.

We designed Skipper to be as stealthy as possible—this was part of the reason for the long delay. Originally, it was planned to release Skipper in March or April, but it turned out to be much more challenging than I anticipated. We had to change direction and approaches multiple times. I even went on a personal crusade against mathematics, wasting tons of time trying to create a human-like mouse movement algorithm that commonly used ML models wouldn't easily flag.

Somehow, I convinced myself that such an algorithm was absolutely necessary. Maybe this is what programming PTSD looks like. However, once I started testing it in real-world conditions—skipping from session to session—it became clear that this extra work was a wasted effort. The current design works just fine without it.

I can't say for certain that it's 10000% safe to use on Ome.tv or any other website that would want to combat such automation for whatever reason, but we've done our best to reduce their ability to trace and target you. It’s a real bummer because we simply can't roll out cool features like auto-start website mode across all sites to alert you whenever a connection happens. We had to trade off convenience against security, and it's really hard to strike the right balance. That said, security remains our priority and we are doing what we can to be ready for everything.

If Skipper gets reliably detected, there's not much sane options left except for a custom browser. Brave has basically done everything we might ever need—from patches to a built-in VPN—but maintenance would still be a hassle. Developing and maintaining a custom browser is a significant commitment, one that may be too large for a side project, but we will see if that would be necessary or not.

It is crazy to think that it is easier to create an OmegleLike Browser than to nail down a good mouse movement algorithm. That part was incredibly frustrating for me. But anyway, if you’re still using Videochat Extension on blacklisted sites, you know the risks!
