EXCLUSIVE REACTION: My Lady Jane 1x02

Comments

i don’t get this unnecessary hate lmao this show was so much more refreshing and entertaining than all the same old boring basic shit that comes out

Ariana Meyer

I was the same at first...it was promoted (at least that I saw) as being very Bridgerton-esque...I was so irritated when I realized it was fantasy! I do like fantasy sometimes, but it's not what I was expecting. However, I did come to really like the show for its own sake and I'm so upset it was canceled.

Megan Brick

Thankfully Benji is LOVING IT!!!

pinkpopcast

Wow the reactions are more disappointing than the cancelation of the series. I guess, I enjoyed all the aspects that annoy you in this show 😄 I appreciated the self awareness of overusing romantasy tropes, the ironic and modern narration and the surprise of fantasy element. Oh the music is great!

Diana

I don’t know why but Mary looks like the woman in Chicken Run

Gabrielle

I honestly do not think it was meant to be Bridgerton reaction, it is completely something else and I have not even heard this comparison until now and did not hear anyone from creators compared it to Bridgerton maybe some warchers compared it wrongly but I really do not think that was creators intentions.

I'm so with Rizzo about the whole shape shifting crap. The whole show was disappointing to me because it was promoted on social media as "watch this if you miss Bridgerton". Did I binge it in one sitting? Yes. Did I enjoy it? Some parts. Was it cringy? All the fucking time. Is it like Birdgerton? Not even close. I honestly think I liked the music that was used the most.

Agree! There's a lot about it that is so smart, and it's so clear how much they love the history whilst also deviating with the fantasy play on Catholics and Protestants. There's things that are so obscure that are a reference to the real history which, as a Tudor history lover, are so fun to pick out. The original authors and the showrunners/writers for the show clearly were passionate, and as you said in your other comment when you read their interviews they had a lot of love for it. This was my favourite show of the year due to how refreshing it was! It's not for everyone, but I think it deserves credit for the subversions, and also, for how they choose to have it all play out😊

Agreed I would categorize the show as a “a little campy” but very intentionally so. There’s so many historical dramas already out there, I enjoyed the subversion.

Rizzo, I am still right there with ya in the 'wtf am I watching-not what I signed up for' boat. However, I still do enjoy the reactions, lol. Honestly, I am glad i didn't watch this on my own because I wouldn't have had anyone to share in my disappointment. How this was supposedly Amazon's answer to Netflix's Bridgerton is BEYOND my comprehension. Just because it is a "period" piece (very loosely period) with a twist of modern music? (although, unlike Bridgerton, it's done more like a Knights tale...where it's just modern music over period piece to keep it cool or something...) I don't generally judge a show so early on, but from what I have seen, i'm not shocked that it was canceled after this one season.

I didn't get interested in this series until TT categorized it as weaponized incompetence (he can't be bothered to try to control his ability while she's trying to find a cure). Would it help to watch it under that POV?

Maria Galindo

It being cancelled is just so heartbreaking, I read an article about how passionate the writers were about it.

Molly

It’s not super fantastical at all lol. It’s about rewriting Jane Grey with an allegory about Protestants and Catholics it’s not that deep. It’s swashbuckling fun! The show itself is so clever you can tell how much the writers like history.

I prefer this to Bridgerton, but I am a scifi/fantasy girl thu and thru. To me, this show is satire, so I don't mind the Ethian Transition Shortcut, but I completely get why Rizzo thinks that the writers could have found cooler or smarter ways to move the story forward or in different directions. I like the way the show teases the show's audience about romance tropes, while leaning into it like idiots. Reminds me of Monty Python and Black Adder projects. I hope that maybe this perspective might help Rizzo just let go and say, yes, there is lazy writing for gimmick and transition trick shortcuts. deus ex machina, but it's not the point, but you're right that part could have been done better. I'm a 2010+ Whovian, so pls understand that I've learned to criticize and let go., so I can enjoy a fun show. It's ok if Rizzo never gets over the Ethian ankle weight but I hope his immersion actually increases for his own enjoyment. Totally fine if he dislikes it more, as he sees more. I can't watch Tom Cruise projects. I just can't. My problem. Nobody elses. My skin crawls just thinking about it. Ethians could be Rizzo's Tom Cruise. No judgment here :)

I was thrown with the fantasy too, but I kinda did not mind it at all (I hate too complicated worlds too, especially if it is primarily about the world and not the story). I just viewed the fantasy aspect as a metaphor - I think that with the fanatasy element to it you have broader problems to "cover". Yes, it is basically just for protestants vs catholics conflict, but because it is something that is not real, more people can see themselves with their unique struggle in life. Also, I like the show because it was easy but so over the top and ridiculous - I called it "romantasy on crack" 😄 Love your reaction as always ❤️ And it's okay to not like everything! 😄

Like honestly it is not likely the petition will help because of that this is amazon, I mean I signed it but I kind of expect it will not get renewed. I was really angry at first now I am just enjoying you two watching it.

24:47 He did actually play a vampire previously in A Discovery of Witches. Main reason I gave this show a chance was because I liked his performance as Marcus. I'm with Rizzo honestly, the shape shifting theme is used more like a crutch in the story (doesn't add much -- Gilford easily could've just had an historically accurate illness/deformity Jane needed to cure. Or maybe a realigous or political affiliation). Doesn't add anything for me since they don't do anymore world building. Now, A Discovery of Witches uses the ideas of vampires, witches and time travel to frame the story -- it couldn't be told without it. Side note - I was surprised to see it added to Netflix recently so maybe it will become more commercially popular for reaction channels to visit. A much better fantasy story that you might appreciate Rizzo.

Rizzo’s complaints, which are completely valid, this show was not advertised as a fantasy show, is one of the reasons I was confused when people compared it to Bridgerton. They are two completely different shows, with potentially different target audiences, so comparing them sets up the wrong expectations for some people, like Rizzo. I am sorry you are not enjoying it.
