In Deadpool With a System [9]

Angel gave him a sharp look. “You can’t smell this?”

Ajax shook his head. “Lost my sense of taste and smell a long time ago. Doesn’t bother me.”

Angel turned away, suppressing the nausea rising in his stomach. “If I go any closer, I might pass out.”

“Then stay here,” Ajax said without hesitation. “I’ll check it out.” Without another word, he walked straight into the mist, his movements precise and unwavering as he made his way to Dane’s room.

Upon entering, the first thing he saw was Dane lying unconscious on the operating table, his face pale, foam still lingering at the corners of his mouth. The room reeked of decay and something far worse. Ajax’s gaze shifted downward, landing on a familiar figure sprawled lifelessly on the floor. Walter.

Ajax crouched down, gripping Walter’s shoulder and flipping the corpse over. A quick glance was enough—he was dead. However, Dane was merely unconscious. Ajax barely spared him another look before turning away, moving swiftly to inspect the other rooms.

Meanwhile, the bald warden had returned, this time with a squad of his men—all of whom were now equipped with gas masks. Each of them carried portable air purifiers, which they immediately deployed throughout B-Zone. The machines hummed to life, filtering out the toxins in the air.

It took over three hours, but eventually, the suffocating stench began to fade. Though traces of the foul odor remained, it was no longer lethal.

As soon as the atmosphere became somewhat tolerable, the warden approached Ajax. “Did you find Walter?” he asked, his voice filled with an unusual level of concern.

Ajax didn’t even hesitate. “He’s dead.” His tone was indifferent, as if stating a simple fact.

The warden’s expression twisted with rage. “Who did it? Who the hell dares to kill one of my people?!” His hands clenched into fists, veins bulging at his temples.

Ajax remained calm. “Walter must have triggered the test subject’s abilities.” His eyes flickered toward the unconscious Dane. “And it just so happens that this particular subject can generate lethal gas.”

The warden’s face contorted with fury. His grip tightened around his gun, his fingers twitching with the urge to pull the trigger. “I’m going to put a bullet in that bastard’s head.” He turned sharply, ready to storm toward Dane’s room.

Before he could take a single step, a firm hand gripped his shoulder, stopping him in his tracks.

“Let go,” he growled, turning to glare at the one restraining him.

Angel met his gaze without flinching. “Kill whoever you want, but not the mutants. They’re too valuable.”

The warden’s eyes widened slightly. For a moment, he was too shocked to respond. Angel had always been a man of few words, one who preferred action over speech. Yet now, he was stepping forward to defend a mutant?

Ajax crossed his arms, nodding in agreement. “Angel’s right. That kid’s ability is dangerous, but it also has value. Plenty of buyers would pay a fortune for something like this.” His expression was unreadable, but his next words carried a hint of amusement. “We could use him as a living toxin bomb. Throw him into enemy territory and let nature take its course.”

The warden clenched his jaw, but after a moment, he lowered his weapon. Ajax was in charge. If he said the test subject was worth keeping alive, then that was that.

However, before any of them could speak further—

BANG!

The door to Dane’s room was violently kicked open.

From the dimly lit interior, a figure lunged out. His entire body was covered in green scales, and a long, reptilian tail thrashed behind him as he bolted forward with wild, desperate eyes.

A test subject had broken free.

“It’s Subject 58—he’s mutated.”

The bald warden recognized the test subject immediately. Subject 58 had endured over a month of torture without a single sign of mutation. And yet, today, he had transformed—his once-human features twisted into something monstrous. His skin had turned a sickly green, and his face had become reptilian, sharp fangs lining his mouth.

BOOM!

Before the warden could process what was happening, another explosion rocked B-Zone. A fiery glow flashed from one of the nearby rooms. The heavy iron door was blasted off its hinges, flying several meters before crashing into the opposite wall with a deafening clang.

A woman emerged from the smoke, her skin pale, but her most striking feature was her hair—it was engulfed in roaring red flames, burning so intensely that even the best hairstylists in the world would shake their heads in disbelief.

“She mutated too?! That’s Subject 68! She’s only been here for a week!” The warden’s eyes widened in shock as he fell backward onto the floor. His expression was a mix of astonishment and delight, like a salesman who had just landed a massive deal.

And in a way, he had.

These newly mutated subjects weren’t just dangerous anomalies—they were assets. Their existence meant one thing: profit.

“Let me out of here! It stinks!”

A sudden, deafening voice echoed through the entire underground facility.

The warden flinched. “That voice… Another one’s mutating?!”

More and more test subjects were awakening their abilities. The sheer number of transformations happening at once was unprecedented. The warden, overwhelmed by excitement, went from sitting to kneeling, as if witnessing a miracle.

The others, however, were not as thrilled.

“You bald bastard! I swear I’ll rip you apart!”

The reptilian Subject 58 locked his sharp, slitted eyes onto the warden. His nostrils flared, his claws flexed, and with a powerful lunge, he charged straight at him.

If the warden was the salesman in this scenario, then these test subjects were the furious customers—scammed, tortured, and ready to tear him limb from limb.

Before the warden could react, a towering figure stepped in front of him.

Angel.

With calm but deliberate steps, she moved directly into the reptilian man’s path. There was no hesitation, no flinch of fear. She simply braced herself, standing firm like an immovable wall.

BAM!

Subject 58 collided with her, expecting to bulldoze her aside. Instead, the moment of impact sent a shockwave through his skull. His vision blurred. His head rang as if someone had struck a giant gong inside his brain.
