In Deadpool With a System [14]

Angel couldn’t stand the sight and turned her head away.
Only after he had finally slowed down did she bother looking at him again.
“…Those three earlier. What’s their deal with you? Why were they targeting you?” she asked.
Dane wiped his mouth, his expression calm. “We used to be friends.”
Angel raised an eyebrow. “Friends? Don’t tell me… you borrowed money from them and never paid it back?”
He chuckled. “No, it’s not about money.”
“Then I can’t imagine anything else that would ruin a friendship that badly.”
Dane’s expression darkened slightly.
“We weren’t always mutants,” he admitted. “Back then, we looked just like you.”
As they spoke, Angel’s gaze grew distant, lost in old memories.
“…So you guys are experiments too?”
“You could say that,” Dane admitted. “Back then, the four of us went on a trip together. But on the way… we got into a car accident. When we woke up, we were already here—inside this facility.”
Angel’s expression shifted slightly. “They saved you… and turned you into mutants at the same time?”
Dane nodded. “That’s right. They treated our injuries, but in the process, they changed us.”
“You must have suffered a lot,” Angel murmured.
“The pain from the accident was already unbearable,” Dane said with a dry chuckle. “Honestly, surviving and gaining abilities… I guess you could call it a second chance at life.”
“…Then why the fallout? What happened between you and them?”
Dane leaned back, his gaze turning distant. “Originally, all four of us were supposed to become Ajax’s assistants. He’s one of the top figures in this facility. Being chosen as his assistant comes with a lot of benefits.”
“But in the end… you were the only one selected, while the others were rejected?”
Dane sighed. “Yeah. Out of the four of us, I was the only one picked. They thought I rigged it somehow, that I betrayed them to get ahead. From that day on… we weren’t friends anymore.”
Angel was silent for a moment, then reached out and patted his shoulder. “Doesn’t matter. You’ve still got me as a friend.”
Dane looked at her in surprise, then grinned. “Well, I guess that makes it worth something.”
Angel tilted her head slightly. “What about you? How did you end up here?”
“That’s what I want to know the most.” Dane picked up half a banana and shoved it into his mouth. “There’s gotta be someone here with some kind of ‘seer’ ability, right? A fortune teller, or a mind reader… someone who can give me answers. I need to find them.”
He swallowed his bite, then added with a straight face, “I need to figure out why I’m here… and whether I can go back. My friend still owes me 8,000 bucks. I can’t just let that money disappear into thin air.”
[Angel has now realized that you are highly motivated by money.]
[Wealth +10 (Current Wealth: 10)]
Dane blinked. “Wealth +10? What kind of weird ability is this?”
Before he could process it further, someone suddenly sat down in the empty seat next to him.
Angel reacted first. “Who are you?”
The newcomer smiled. “Nice to meet you both. My name is Mike.” He leaned in slightly. “Or, if you prefer… you can call me ‘The Omniscient.’”
Dane nearly choked on his banana. “No way. That’s way too convenient.”
Mike raised an eyebrow. “What is?”
Dane turned to Angel. “I was just saying I needed to find someone who knows everything. And boom—he shows up.”
Mike chuckled. “I happened to see your little standoff with those three earlier. You were impressive. I thought I’d introduce myself.”
With a polite smile, he extended his hand toward Dane.
Dane didn’t shake it. Instead, he picked up a banana from the table and handed it to Mike.
Mike glanced at the banana, then set it down.
Dane, still unsatisfied, picked it up again and pressed it back into Mike’s hand.
Seeing no way out, Mike sighed and accepted it.
“So, you call yourself ‘The Omniscient’ and claim to know everything about this place?” Dane asked, watching him closely. “Then tell me—how did I end up here?”
Mike peeled the banana, about to take a bite.
“I don’t know.”
Dane’s eye twitched. Without warning, he snatched half of the banana from Mike’s hand.
“The hell? Then what are you bragging for?” He popped the stolen banana into his mouth. “You don’t know squat, and you’re still eating my food?”
Mike sighed. “You gave it to me.”
“Yeah, well, I’m taking it back.”
Mike smirked. “If you really want, I can grab you another one.”
Dane waved him off. “Nah, I think you should just leave. I don’t waste my time with useless people.”
Without hesitation, he took the remaining half of the banana straight out of Mike’s hand.
“Wait, don’t be mad,” Mike said hurriedly. “I only said that as a joke.”
Dane narrowed his eyes. “A joke?”
Mike glanced around, then leaned in close. “Alright, I’ll tell you the truth. My ability isn’t true omniscience.” His voice dropped to a whisper. “I have enhanced hearing. Within a one-mile radius, no sound escapes me. That’s why I know every secret this facility holds.”
“What are you two doing!?”
Angel suddenly stood up, glaring at them suspiciously. She had a feeling something was off.
Dane immediately put on an innocent smile and waved his hands. “Oh, it’s nothing. Mike here was just secretly asking me if you have a boyfriend. He wants to confess to you.”
“Really?” Angel narrowed her eyes at Mike, clearly not convinced.
“Of course! How could I dare lie to you?” Dane said with an exaggeratedly sincere expression.
[Successfully erased Angel’s doubts.]
[Deception +15 (Current Deception: 15)]
“Huh!?”
Mike looked completely dumbfounded. He had no such intentions at all!
Dane leaned in close and whispered under the table, “Just go along with it unless you want to get exposed. Don’t worry—Angel isn’t interested in romance. She’ll reject you.”
